Education is essential to Nursing Development!
Acquisition of new knowledge and skills is encouraged through a variety of ways at Terre Haute Regional Hospital and will continue as long as you remain an employee. It begins with hospital orientation and is followed by nursing orientation and your preceptorship. This is an approximately 4-8-week program during which you will be assigned to a preceptor who will facilitate your orientation to your new position. Annual education may include, but is not limited to, the Competency Fair, the Safety Fair, annual competency checklists, and CPR, as well as any additional mandatory inservices deemed necessary. CPR recertification is required yearly. Voluntary educational programs are offered frequently as well. Some of these are, monthly Education Hours, which consist of qualified speakers presenting information during a catered lunch to which all nursing employees are welcome. Another is HSTN Lunch and Learns; ½ hour video presentations offered two days per month. Meal tickets for the cafeteria are provided. In addition, HSTN videos are available for checkout from the Education Department. ACLS and PALS courses and Critical Care classes are offered frequently for employees free of charge. A monthly nursing newsletter called, Nurses Notes, is also published by the Educational Services Department. Additionally, literature searches are also available from the Educational Services Department.

Mandatory education is assigned according to your job description. You may be asked to read information, view posters, attend presentations, complete pre or post tests, physically demonstrate skills and/or complete computer programs. Education via the computer may occur in two ways: either through the CPCS system in Mox or through HealthStream. HealthStream is a provider of on-line education via the Internet. This is a great opportunity to learn basic computer skills or to enhance those you already have!!! As you have probably observed, continuing education at Terre Haute Regional Hospital is encouraged and at times required. One way that education is encouraged is through the CAP (Career Advancement Program). The CAP exists to provide an incentive and recognition program, to improve clinical practices, to improve job satisfaction, to provide an alternate pathway for advancement, to reinforce responsibility and accountability, and to assure opportunities for growth and participation in professional decision-making. The goal is intended to promote higher standards of patient care delivery through greater employee satisfaction. Again, welcome to Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
